Centre for Academic and Instructional Development - The ICE System
Role of the Senate Office
The student evaluation of teaching system at Saint Mary’s has always been, and continues to be, the full responsibility of the Senate Office. During the evaluation cycle each semester and during summer sessions, the Senate Office is responsible for the implementation of the various activities connected with each cycle – communications with faculty, preparation of the evaluation packages, as a distribution and collection site, and as a repository for the data collected. None of this will change under the new system.
Role of the CAID in the New System
The Director of CAID was a member of the three committees which met between 2000 – 2006 to identify a new student evaluation of teaching form for Saint Mary’s, to recommend an implementation process, and to pilot both before submitting to Senate for approval and campus-wide use. Members of these committees also included the Chair, Dr. Shelagh Crooks, Department of Philosophy; a SMUFU representative, a CUPE representative, a representative of SMUSA, and a graduate student.
The role of the CAID in this new system is to provide support to faculty through the development of this website, and in other ways requested by faculty relating to the developmental/formative aspects of the ICE system.
It should be noted that the Centre for Academic and Instructional Development is not involved in any way in the receipt or analysis of data for evaluation purposes.
Role of the Center for Academic Technologies (CAT) in the ICE System
The Center for Academic Technologies, under the direction of CAID, was established to assist faculty and faculty support personnel who wish to develop their computer skills or use of technology for teaching and learning.
Under the ICE system, the optical read machine used to scan the bubble sheets is located in the CAT, in a separate room. The data from the scanned forms will be received on a server in ITSS where the data will be compiled into ICE Reports, sent to the Print Centre for printing and delivered back to the Senate Office for distribution to faculty. The only change from the ‘old’ procedure to the one noted above is the scanning of forms in the CAT versus manually inputting the data in the Senate Office.
