Saint Mary's University Quality of Teaching Committee
Dr. Geraldine Thomas Educational Leadership Award
Saint Mary’s University Quality of Teaching Committee is delighted to announce the establishment of the Dr. Geraldine Thomas Educational Leadership Award. The award will be given to recognize a faculty member who has provided leadership among colleagues in developing institutional structures and processes, and in pursuing activities that help create an environment at Saint Mary’s University in which teaching excellence is fostered and appreciated. The naming of this award recognizes and honors Dr. Geraldine Thomas' more than twenty-year commitment to teaching, learning and educational leadership at Saint Mary’s University, in the Atlantic Region, and nationally. The award will consist of a plaque, presented to the winner at the Spring Convocation, a monetary award, and a framed plaque hung on the President’s Wall of Academic Excellence.

Nomination Form
Nomination forms should be submitted to the Centre for Academic and Instructional Development, AT107A, by closing on Friday, February 26, 2010. Written documentation in support of the nomination should be submitted by Friday, March 26, 2010.

Saint
Mary’s University Alumni
Father William A. Stewart, S.J. Medal for Teaching
The
Father William A. Stewart, S.J. Medal for Teaching was established
in 1983 by the Saint Mary’s University Alumni Association
to honor Father Stewart, who taught in the Philosophy Department
at Saint Mary’s University for many years, and held numerous
administrative positions.
The
gold medal is presented to the winner at the Spring Convocation,
and a monetary award is presented at the Alumni Association Annual
General Meeting.

Association of Atlantic
Universities (AAU)
Distinguished Teacher Award
This
award was established in 1991 by the Association of Atlantic Universities
to encourage excellence in teaching in the Universities of the
Atlantic region. The award acknowledges individuals who exemplify
such excellence over a number of years and is typically open to
full time members of teaching faculty as nominated by their respective
institutions.

Anne Marie MacKinnon Instructional Leadership
Award
This
award was established in 1991 by the Association of Atlantic Universities
to recognize commitment, over an extended period of time, to the
improvement of university teaching within the candidate’s
own institution and beyond. It is typically open to full time
members of teaching faculty as nominated by their respective institutions.

and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE/SAPES)

STLHE
is a national organization which supports, encourages and facilitates
the improvement of teaching and learning and the scholarship of
teaching in post-secondary education.

- Alan Blizzard Award
The
Alan Blizzard Award is designed to stimulate and reward collaboration
in teaching, and encourage and disseminate scholarship in teaching
and learning.

STLHE
- 3M Teaching Fellowship Program
This
Program was established in 1986 as a collaboration between 3M
Canada Inc. and STLHE. These awards recognize teaching excellence
as well as educational leadership.
Up
to ten Fellowships are awarded each year. There are currently
182 3M Teaching Fellows throughout Canada representing a broad
range of academic disciplines.
Saint
Mary’s University has three 3M Teaching Fellows – Dr.
John Young, professor emeritus, Chemistry, (1990); Dr. Geraldine
Thomas, Modern Language and Classics (1993); and Dr. Esther Enns,
Dean of Arts (1998).

Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council of Canada
The Gerhard Hetzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering
The
NSERC Herzberg Medal, the Council's highest honor, recognizes
research contributions characterized by both excellence and influence – two
qualities that defined Dr. Herzberg's career. It is awarded annually
to an individual who has demonstrated sustained excellence and
influence in research, for a body of work conducted in Canada
that has substantially advanced the natural sciences or engineering
fields.
