Welcome to the

Atlantic Centre of Research, Access and Support for Students with Disabilities

The Atlantic Centre is an integral part of the Saint Mary's University philosophy of furthering the vision of an inclusive society which supports the attainment of academic, career and personal goals for persons of all abilities. The Atlantic Centre fulfills this philosophy through programs of student service, education, and research.

To help provide the best possible service to students, staff, faculty and visitors, the University established this website. Here you will find information relating to disability and access at the University and beyond. If you have any comments regarding the website or suggestions as to links that should be added, please use the feedback box below.

What We Do

The Atlantic Centre establishes individualized support service programs to facilitate the participation of students with disabilities. Our services provide assistance to students to address the effects of disabilities on academic performance.

Students who have been diagnosed with a learning disability, mobility impairment, vision impairment, hearing impairment, medical condition or mental health condition, can meet with our staff for information on what services and resources are available for them.

When Can I Visit?

Students with disabilities should contact the Atlantic Centre upon admittance to Saint Marys University.  Early self-identification will help us to provide you with the best possible service. Transition planning is a key success, so please contact us for a visit while you are in High School.

How Do I Receive Services?

Please be aware that in order to receive services from The Atlantic Centre, students must register and provide documentation that verifies the disability. This can include a letter from a doctor, a registered health professional or a psychoeducational report.

The accommodations and services that students with disabilities are entitled to are determined on an individual basis. Meeting with a counsellor at The Atlantic Centre will assist students in developing a specialized and individualized plan for their academic success. Counsellors will make referrals to the various services offered at SMU and will be available to meet with students regularly to monitor the effectiveness of these services.

To make an appointment to see a counsellor regarding disability services, please call 420-5452.  Click here to find answers to some commonly asked questions.

All information concerning a student’s disability and involvement with the The Atlantic Centre is strictly confidential. Information will only be released with written consent by the student to any sources outside of our office.
