Classroom Interpreting

ASL/English Interpreting is provided in the classroom to students who are deaf, are attending Saint Mary's University, and make a request for interpretation services. Once you are officially registered in a degree program, please provide your Atlantic Centre counsellor with a copy of your class schedule, especially: class times and durations, your professors' names, and classroom numbers. The interpreter coordinator will then use this information to determine and set up an interpreting schedule, and make sure there are enough interpreters to cover your classes and/or labs.

Due to the limited availability of resources, interpreting services are provided according to the following priority groups:

  • Nova Scotian provincially-funded students attending Saint Mary's University
  • Non-Nova Scotian (i.e. Canadian out of province) provincially-funded students attending Saint Mary's University
  • All other non-funded Saint Mary's University students in a degree program

Requesting Interpreting Services

During the school year, classroom interpreting service is given the top priority, however if you need an interpreter for a university related event outside of regular class time e.g. a meeting with a professor or tutor, please contact the interpreter coordinator with at least 24 hours notice.
Please note: requests for interpreting at non-course related events are subject to limited interpreter availability and timing; an interpreter is not automatically guaranteed to be available if the event conflicts with a scheduled classroom interpreting assignment, or if the request is made at the last minute, but the Interpreter Coordinator will always try to accommodate your request in a reasonable manner.

Cancellation Policy

If you are sick or cannot make it to class, please call the Atlantic Centre or email/text the interpreter coordinator as soon as possible - at least 24 hours notice is preferred. Also, if the interpreter for your class is suddenly unavailable and no substitute can be found, the Interpreter Coordinator will contact you immediately.
