Executive Master of Business Administration
Frequently Asked Questions
Would I be a good fit for The Sobey School of Business Executive MBA program?
Typically, candidates are successful professionals, often mid-career, and highly motivated to advance in their career and improve their marketability.
Many students are employed as managers, executives, and professionals - others are "self-made" entrepreneurs with thriving businesses of their own. They are united through a keen awareness of the leadership challenges in a complex and rapidly shifting work environment. In order to remain competitive, they recognize the need to sharpen their leadership skills and strategic thinking.
We are pleased to offer a no obligation assessment. Simply email your resume to Kelly Smith for a preliminary assessment. Within 48 hours we’ll let you know if you’re likely to be a successful candidate for the program.
What does the committee consider when reviewing applications?
The EMBA admissions committee considers numerous factors, including work experience, academic history, recommendations, company sponsorship, personal interview and the body of the application itself. Most important, however is work experience, including a candidate's work history and current role and responsibilities in his or her organization. All candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of work experience.
When is the application deadline?
Application deadline is June 30.
When will I be notified of the admissions decision?
About 20 days after the Executive MBA office has received the completed application and all supporting materials, you will receive, by mail, a decision regarding acceptance to the program.
Can I get my application reviewed early if I am waiting to hear from another school?
If you request an early decision, we will attempt to get a response to you as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that many applicants are in similar situations and have requested early decisions as well.
Can I defer admission?
Yes, you may defer your offer of admission up to one year.
What if I don't have the required 5 years of work experience?
The applicant pool is competitive, so eight or more years of solid work experience is highly advised before applying to the program. Most of our students have between 10 - 12 years of work experience.
Do I need to take the GMAT?
Applicants who do not have a Bachelor’s degree are required to take the GMAT. After review of the application in committee, some applicants may be required to take the GMAT in order to strengthen their application.Top
Is it possible to be admitted without a university degree?
Nearly all of our students have a university degree, but those who do not are required to take the GMAT examination.
A complete application for admission consists of the application itself, resume, two letters of recommendation, official transcripts, and a completed interview.
PLEASE NOTE: The Executive MBA Program requires official transcripts from all universities and colleges. This is required for all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned, the program was completed, or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript. Please note that official transcripts are defined as original documents issued by the institution (not photocopies) which bear the actual signature of the Registrar and the seal of the issuing institution.
Will you review my resume or partial application before I apply via phone or email?
As a part of the application process, a meeting prior to the submission of an application is required. We can review your application questions at this time. The only way we really can make sure we are getting the full picture of you as an applicant and vice versa is by going through the full application process - paying close attention to the fact that you need to feel that the program is the best fit for you and you are competitive for admission. Attending an information session is highly advisable before applying.
Is the online application the only way to apply?
Yes, we only accept applications and reference letters submitted online. Resume, statement of objectives, and official transcripts are sent via email to Kelly Smith at KellyL.Smith@smu.ca.
Is there an application fee?
Yes. The fee is $70. Click here to begin your application process.
Who should write the letters of recommendation?
The program requires two letters of recommendation from supervisors and/or peer colleagues who know the applicant well, preferably from someone within the applicant's current organization. Extra recommendations may be submitted at the applicant's discretion. The letters of recommendation can be completed online.
How important is my GMAT score?
The GMAT requirement may be waived for engineers and those with a Masters Degree, PhD, or professional accounting designation. Work experience and educational background is a key consideration in the admissions process. Access more information on the GMAT, or contact the Program Manager, Kelly Smith.
How much time will I need to commit?
In order to get the most out of the program, expect to spend 20 - 25 hours a week on class preparation and studying.
In addition, students are expected to attend all classes and the professional development speaker series. Absences are acceptable only in the case of an emergency.
What support will I need from my employer?
Employer support regarding time commitment and workload accommodation is essential. It is highly recommended that students minimize business travel or other duties which interfere with class time. Financial sponsorship by your employer is desirable but by no means required. Some participants are fully or partially funded by their companies, while others are entirely self-financed.
How are class teams selected?
After careful consideration of skills, backgrounds, experience and strengths, the EMBA program finalizes the formation of four - five member groups. This attention to diversity ensures that each team can adopt a multi-faceted approach to decision-making.
How much will it cost?
Program fees vary from year to year, and are roughly $25,500 per year. There is a $70 application fee. Upon acceptance, a $1,000 deposit is required to reserve your place in the class and cover your expenses for the preparatory workshop in August. The EMBA fee covers tuition, all course materials, all meals while in class and the major expenses for the international trade mission (airfare, hotel, etc).
When should I apply?
The program is very popular and is often filled well before classes start in August. With only thirty (30) seats available, it is advisable to apply as soon as possible. Click here to begin your application process.
