The retail sector employs the most people out of all sectors of the Canadian economy. Retail and wholesale trade account for 12% of the Canadian GDP. The vibrancy and growth of this sector is vital for Canada’s future.
The David Sobey Centre will play an important role in helping Canadian retailers shape a strong future. We will do this through focused multidisciplinary research and our programs. The David Sobey Centre for Innovation in Retailing and Services aims to be the leading source of expertise pertaining to retail and service management.
The David Sobey Centre was made possible due to a generous gift from Dr. David Sobey, Chairman Emeritus at Empire Company Limited. We are very appreciative of his generosity and inspired by his vision. We hope to play a role in helping build a vibrant retail sector in Canada.
The Centre is multidisciplinary in nature. It brings together research expertise in marketing and consumer behavior, human resources and leadership, operations, IT and data mining, as well financial management. We will draw upon expertise across the campus in psychology, occupational health and safety, geography and computing science.
The Centre has two major areas of focus:
- Research that will help retailers address challenges of today and prepare for opportunities of tomorrow. We will work with retailers in Canada and across the globe in pursuing our applied research agenda.
- Education and training that will develop the next generation of retail leaders. We will also offer executive education programs aimed at senior retail managers. In collaboration with our retail partners, we hope to provide students several experiential learning opportunities, including case competitions, innovation challenges and internships.
We will organize special speaker and networking events for retailers. An annual conference and a state-of-the-art retail innovation lab are part of our future plans.
