Saint Mary's University Halifax Longshoremen’s Association Local 269 I.L.A. Scholarship Application

Who can apply?

This scholarship is for full or part-time undergraduate students who are entering or continuing their studies at Saint Mary’s University and are a member of Local 269 I.L.A. or a member’s immediate family. The deadline for this application is May 1, 2018.

It is not necessary to submit transcripts. All academic information will be verified. Please ensure that all academic information requested appears on your transcript by May 25, 2018 (i.e. grade changes). Letters regarding special circumstances (i.e. letter of permission) must be received at Financial Aid & Awards prior to May 25, 2018. No eligibility changes will be considered after this date. For entering students, please forward your final high school transcripts by July 5, 2018.

Part 1 - Application and Personal Statement: Complete the application below, including your personal information and list your extracurricular activities (on-campus and community involvement). Your personal statement must describe your: (1) educational and career goals (2) leadership activities (3) extracurricular activities, including your interests and hobbies (4) Saint Mary’s University community involvement and (5) external community involvement. Also include anything that makes you special or unique that you have not included on your application form and reasons why you should be considered for the Halifax Longshoremen’s Association Local 269 I.L.A. Scholarship. Please make sure your personal statement letter follows the 6 criteria listed below:

  • 750 words maximum
  • Font - Times New Roman
  • 1 page single spaced maximum
  • 2 pages double spaced maximum
  • If you have financial need, you can briefly explain your situation in your letter
  • Please put your first and last name and A# on each page of your personal statement.

Part 2 - Faculty Recommendation Form:To be considered for this award students must have a recommendation form completed by a Saint Mary’s University faculty member. For students entering Saint Mary's, a recommendation form may be completed by your Principal, Guidance Counsellor or Teacher. Recommendation forms must be received by May 25, 2018.

Personal Statement Letter

The Personal Statement Letter is a mandatory requirement for this application and will be used in the decision making process of this scholarship. Applications without a personal statement letter will be considered incomplete. Your personal statement must describe your: (1) educational and career goals (2) leadership activities (3) extracurricular activities, including your interests and hobbies (4) Saint Mary’s University community involvement and (5) external community involvement. When your application and personal statement letter are submitted, a copy of your submission will be sent to your e-mail address for your own records, and a new form will appear to complete Part 2 - Reference Identification.
