Saint Mary's Academic Writing Awards, Winter 2012
The academic writing awards for Fall 2011 are now open for submissions. Papers from every discipline are accepted in two categories: one for students in first year and second year and one for student in third to fourth year.
To submit your entry, please follow these guidelines:
Please fill out an entry form. Each entry must be sumitted in hard copy with a completed entrance form. No electronic entries will be accepted.
Students may only submit one paper per subject (Arts, Science, Business) per term.
Please note: papers written for first-year courses that are written by upper-level students will be evaluated in the upper-level categories.
Students do not have to be registered in the program for which they are submitting a paper (for example, students in Science may submit an English 1205 paper).
Papers must
-be written by an undergraduate student
-have been submitted for a Winter 2011 course
-be accompanied by a submission form
-be a clean hardcopy (no markings, no electronic files)
-be individually written: group assignments are not eligible
-not have the student’s name on any page except for the submission form
-be submitted by Friday, April 27, 2012.
Submission forms must be signed by the instructor of the course for which the paper was submitted. The title of the paper must be written on the submission form so the instructor knows that he or she is signing off on the correct paper. Please include a copy of the assignment for your submitted work.
Adjudication Procedure
Papers will be adjudicated by a panel consisting of a member of the Writing Centre Director, and faculty members from the corresponding department.
Papers will be adjudicated anonymously.
Awards will be given for the best first-year paper and best upper-level paper in Arts and Business, and for the best lower-level (1st and 2nd year) paper and best upper-level (3rd and 4th year) paper in Science.
The panels have the right to not declare a winner, if they determine that no submissions in a category meet the award criteria.
The student with the winning paper for each category will receive $100.00, an entry on his/her transcript and publication in the Writing Centre's academic journal, Afficio.
Second and third place winners will receive an entry on their transcripts. Second place winners' entries will also be published in the Writing Centre's academic journal, Afficio.
