2nd Annual Writing Centre Scrabble© Smackdown


 

Saturday,  March 3rd, from 10:00 – 4:00 pm -- Student Centre Café.

To register your team, please come by the Writing Centre for a registration form, or use this download.

The tournament is open to all staff, students, faculty and alumni. This is a team event, with teams consisting of up to three members. Preregistration is required, as there will be a limited number of teams, and the cost is $5.00 per team member. Teams could be by department or society, and specific challenges are naturally encouraged—a Scrabble Smackdown.

There will be prizes for top scoring word, most unusual word, high scoring game, and, of course, for the champion team, the “Wordsmiths of Saint Mary’s!"

Rules

Tournament rules will follow the Official Scrabble Tournament Rules. though there are some adjustments for specfic tournament rules.

Specific Tournament Rules apply

Round one -- Maxumum 32 registered teams to play three rounds of 30 min games. This first round is a round-robin format, with the 16 top-scoring teams moving on to the second round

Round two -- Top-scoring 16 teams from round one will play one, 30-minute game. The top-scoring 8 teams advance to the third round.

Round three -- Top-scoring 8 teams from round two will play one, 30-minute game. The top-scoring 4 teams advance to the fourth round.

Round four -- Top-scoring 4 teams from round three will play one, 45-minute game. The top-scoring 2 teams advance to the fifth round.

Round five -- Top-scoring 2 teams from round four will play one, 45-minute game. The top-scoring team from this round will be considered the "Wordsmiths of Saint Mary's," and 2011 Scrabble Tournament Champions!

In the case of a tie at the end of a round, those teams involved with select 7 random tiles and each made the highest scoring word possible in 5 minutes. The team with the highest scoring word will then advance to the next round.

All decisions are that of the Official Judges and are final.
