English as a Second Language Support
Our goal is to help you improve your English and succeed at Saint Mary's University!
ESL Support Services offers English help to non-native speakers who are studying at Saint Mary's University in credit programs . This not only includes international students, but also immigrants and Canadian citizens who speak a language other than English at home. Our goal is to provide language, academic and cultural support to students.

Burke Building – The Writing Centre
When:
Monday to Thursday – 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Friday -12:30 pm to 2:30 pm.
This service, sponsored by the TESL Centre, is designed to provide non-native speakers of English in Saint Mary's University credit courses with extra help in the following areas:
- Reading - comprehension for textbooks, assignments, and exam questions; skimming and scanning; text organization
- Writing - sentence accuracy, grammar, cultural understanding of research practices (plagiarism, critical thinking)
- Listening - comprehension; lecture organization and strategies for predicting
- Speaking - pronunciation; intonation; oral presentations; classroom and group-work participation
- Note-taking - strategies for reading assignments and lectures
- Vocabulary Building
- Spelling Strategies
- General Questions - We are here to help you in any way we can.
There is no more need to struggle or feel shy about your level of English. We are here to provide you with the English support you need to succeed. All SMU credit students are welcome to take advantage of this free service.
