MBA-CMA

If it's Crowded up the Middle....Go Deep. The name of the game is advancement. Success in any kind of business venture demands a multidisciplinary approach, creative thinking and professional managerial skills. The MBA-CMA program, offered jointly by CMA Nova Scotia and Saint Mary's University, is designed to combine the broad business skills of the MBA degree with the accounting expertise and professional skills of the CMA; a combination that will create a winning career path. You can earn two coveted designations in one great program.

In Nova Scotia, the MBA-CMA Program is the regular route to the CMA designation. Applicants currently holding an MBA will not be eligible for the MBA-CMA Program.

Keystones: Keystones to the content and design of this innovative MBA-CMA program are three seminars in contemporary management accounting issues. Like all courses in the program, they are a semester in length and will bring theory together with application to the organizational environment in which the MBA-CMA candidates work.

Topics in these three courses will reflect the best of contemporary issues and will be examined at the strategic, policy and implementation levels. Topics will include target costing, value chains, ABM, life cycle costing, principal and agency relationships, customer value analysis, EVA, balanced scorecard, as well as corporate reengineering, TQM, and strategic brand valuation.

Learning Goals

Consistent with the purpose of the Sobey School of Business as a leading provider of management education, the MBA program provides an integrated, multi-disciplinary education to prepare graduates for leadership and management positions in a wide range of organizations. Listed below are the learning goals for the MBA Program

  1. Communication.
Communication includes specific skills and techniques designed to persuade an audience of the merits of one’s case in a business situation through the use of writing and speech. Effective oral communication is clear, logical and shows purpose. Written communication is effective when it has purpose and logic. The ability to clearly communicate complex issues and be influential in organizational contexts requires superior communication skills.

  2. Leadership.
Leadership is enacting a path toward a goal such that others enthusiastically follow. MBA graduates will find themselves in many positions where leadership must be exercised, as well in positions where different leadership styles are used.

  3. Critical and Strategic Thinking.
Critical thinking involves the ability to understand the complex nature of organizational environments while solving managerial problems. It also includes the ability to apply quantitative tools in support of strategic analysis and action. Being able to systematically evaluate problems and substantiate recommendations is a requirement in managerial/executive positions.

  4. Ethical Awareness.
Ethical thinking in a business situation means that prospective managers can solve problems in a dynamic environment, yet appreciate moral and ethical issues that impact upon their decisions. MBA graduates are expected to understand the consequences of one’s decisions on others, and balance the responsibilities facing the organizations with which they are associated.

  5. Theory Application in Organizations.
Ultimately, business people are called upon to apply their knowledge to a particular organizational or economic context. MBA graduates must therefore possess not only functional-area knowledge, but also be skilled in drawing upon this knowledge as required by the situation.

Required Courses: Other required MBA courses in the joint MBA-CMA program will be Strategic Management, Strategic Marketing, Performance Measurement, Strategic Design and Improvement of Operations, Financial Management, and MIS: Strategy and Practice. In addition to these graduate courses, MBA-CMA candidates will complete the MBA Integrative Management Exercise, an advanced management simulation, and the CMA Canada Board Report.

Electives: Recognizing the increasing business demands made upon CMAs, program designers have set out a series of electives to assist them in a globally competitive environment. MBA-CMA candidates will choose three 6000 level electives. Sample electives are: Financial Reporting and Statement Analysis, Ethics in Global Business, Electronic Commerce, Taxation and Financial Planning and International Business Management. Electives are taken in the spring and summer sessions.

Delivery: All courses will be delivered in an innovative format with full day classroom sessions and Internet delivery. This design greatly expands the program's geographic range. The MBA-CMA program is structured to allow completion within a minimum of 24 months.

Tuition and Costs: The tuition for this program in 2009-2010 was approximately $12,300. This does not include cost of books, materials, travel or accommodation in Halifax (if required), meals or any incidental expenses. Fees are subject to change annually.

Program Details and Admission Process: Admission to this program requires successful completion of the CMA National Entrance Exam. For further program details and admission information, please go to: CMA Nova Scotia Web Site or call:
