What follows are some of the regular events that occur throughout the Sobey School of Business MBA year. Taking part in competitions and interacting with the community allows our students to better apply and test what they've learned.
Bob Shaw Case Competition
The Bob Shaw Case Competition is an integral part of the Sobey School of Business MBA program. All full-time MBA students are required to take part, and part-timer students may choose to. The case competition offers students to opportunity to integrate all the subjects they've learned by applying them to a real-world business challenge.
Sobey School of Business MBA students relish this opportunity to demonstrate what they’ve learned to their classmates, colleagues, friends and the business community.
Recruiters may enjoy viewing the finale of this competition, as it demonstrates the resourceful, enterprising nature of our students… this ability to think on their feet and adjust to unexpected requirements is a key feature our graduates bring to the workplace.
The Sobey School of Business is thrilled to work with donors and alumni to craft meaningful active learning opportunities for students. The opportunity to offer this competition is possible through the generous support of the Shaw family.

An editorial in The Chronicle Herald on Saturday, December 10, 2005 described Bob Shaw as a builder, not only of homes, but also of humanity. In addition to building communities in his role as Vice-Chairman and Director of The Shaw Group, and building spirit as a leader in the community at large, Bob Shaw built a strong foundation of support for Saint Mary’s University.
A scholarship student himself, Bob began giving back long before graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. A 2008, posthumous induction into the Saint Mary’s University Turning Points Hall of Leadership recognized Bob’s outstanding leadership as president of SMUSA, member of the University’s Board of Governors, president of the Alumni Association, chair of the Building on Strength Capital Campaign and member of the Business Development Centre Board. Bob Shaw was a Fellow of the Canadian Chartered Accountant Institute. He volunteered as Chair and Director of numerous foundations and organizations including the Nova Scotia Hospital Foundation, The Abilities Foundation and the Metro United Way Corporate Campaign. He was also past President for both the Canadian and the Nova Scotia Home Builders’ Association.
With his name attached to the Bob Shaw Case Competition, his legacy is that he continues to build--in this case, future leaders, through the Sobey School of Business MBA Program.
RMA Credit Risk Case Competition
The RMA Credit Risk Case Competition at Sobey School of Business is an annual event held to offer MBA students an opportunity to engage in competition with their peers at schools across the country. Students will be provided with a business case which focuses on the real world challenges of managing credit risk in a rapidly changing and increasingly turbulent business environment. The competition will also provide an excellent opportunity for students to network with industry and business leaders while gaining insight into the credit risk management field and its many facets.
