Prior to her academic career, Dr Helms Mills worked in the airline industry for seventeen years. She has combined her interest in aviation with her research on gender, including two Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) sponsored studies on the gendering of organizational cultures, focusing on Air Canada and Pan American Airways. Currently she is co-investigator on another SSHRC grant that looks at the influence of the Cold War on Management Practices. Jean is the author of "Making Sense of Organizational Change" (Routledge, 2003) and co-author of "Understanding Organizational Change (Routledge, 2009). She has co-authored or edited five other books. Jean has presented her work on critical sensemaking, gender, culture and change at numerous national and international conferences and has published her work in "Organizational Research Methods", "Culture and Organization", "Gender, Work and Organization", "Equal Opportunities International", "Journal of Management History" and "Management and Organizational History". She is past Associate Editor (The Americas) of "Culture and Organization" and currently she is an Associate Editor for "Gender, Work and Organization" and serves on the editorial boards of seven journals. Jean is Vice President of Awards for The Administrative Sciences Association of Canada (ASAC) and Co-Chair of the Critical Management Studies Division of The Academy of Management.
