Albert J. Mills' research activities centre on the impact of organization on people, focussing on organizational change and human liberation. Leaving school at 15 his early images of the workplace included conflict, frustration, power differentials, sexually segregated jobs, and other forms of discrimination. Those images were experienced through a series of unskilled jobs and were given broader meaning through the campaigns for peace and social justice that marked the 1960s.

He is currently engaged in long-term studies of the gendering of organizational culture, and the development of management theory. His work has been published in close to 300 books, journal articles, conference proceeding and papers.
