Program Years

In the first two years of the BComm program, students study the disciplines that are fundamental to business and explore individual interests. In the final two years, students complete the requirements for their chosen majors and learn to make decisions integrating all of the functional areas of business.

Required Courses: First Year

The first-year requirements are designed to help students build a strong foundation in writing skills, mathematics, and IT and to provide an introduction to business:

  • ECON 1201.1(.2) Principles of Economics: Micro
  • ECON 1202.1(.2) Principles of Economics: Macro
  • ENGL 1205.1(.2) An Introduction to Literature
  • MGSC 1205.1(.2) Quantitative Methods I
  • MGSC 1206.1(.2) Quantitative Methods II
  • MGMT 1281.1(.2) Introduction to Business Management
  • Nine (9) Non-Commerce elective credit hours

Note: A Non-Commerce elective is a course taken in the Faculties of Arts or Science. A free elective is a course taken in any Faculty.

Required Courses: Second Year

In second year, writing and quantitative-skills development are continued and the functional areas of business are introduced:

  • ACCT 2242.1(.2) Introductory Managerial Accounting
  • CMLW 2201.1(.2) Legal Aspects of Business - Part I
  • COMM 2293.1(.2) Communications
  • MGSC 2207.1(.2) Introductory Statistics
  • MGMT 2383.1(.2) Organizational Behaviour Micro
  • MGMT 2384.1(.2) Organizational Behaviour Macro
  • MKTG 2270.1(.2) Introduction to Marketing
  • Three (3) credit hours in Economics electives - see note below
  • Three (3) credit hours in Non-Commerce electives

Notes:

(i) It is recommended that students planning to major in Economics take ECON 3300.1(.2) or ECON 3301.1(.2).

(ii) Students who are interested in a Human Resource Management major are advised to take ECON 3340.1(.2).

(iii) Other Commerce students may take any three (3) credit hour courses in Economics for which they have the necessary prerequisites.

To be eligible to declare a major, students must have completed 45 credit hours and must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0.


Required Courses: Third and Fourth Year

Students are required to complete a major in Accounting, Computing and Information Systems, Economics, Finance, Global Business Management, Management, Marketing, Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations, General Business Studies, or Entrepreneurship.

It is possible for students to double major in two areas. Students must fulfill the requirements for both. This may require more than 120 credit hours for the degree. Students may not combine the General Business Studies major with any other major .
