Instructor Course Evaluation (ICE)
What is ICE?
The Instructor/Course Evaluation (ICE) system is a Senate supported process of collecting student feedback on teaching. The ICE instrument is based on the Student's Evaluation of Educational Quality (SEEQ) developed by Dr. Herbert Marsh, University of Western Australia, and used in classrooms around the world. The ICE form and process is designed to obtain student feedback on teaching for both formative and summative purposes.
When to Use it?
At the end of each semester/session, the Senate Office creates an evaluation package for every course being offered in that particular semester/session based on information provided by the Registrar's Office (Banner). Packages will contain ICE forms equivalent to the number of students registered for the course, a Statement of Procedures for faculty and student administrators, and an Instructor's Acknowledgement Form. As the scheduled evaluation week approaches, notices are circulated through the Department Secretary or Program Assistant to each faculty member instructing in that session. The notice details the process followed and scheduled evaluation dates. The evaluation week dates and the Annual Summary Reports can be accessed on the menu on the left of this screen.
To Learn More: The Centre for Academic and Instructional Development (CAID) provides more detailed information on the ICE system including sample ICE forms and reports, options for adding additional class/course questions, interpreting and using student feedback, etc. See ICE @ Saint Mary's on the CAID website http://www.smu.ca/administration/caid/welcome.html
