Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How and when do I choose my discipline?
A. At the end of 1st year, students are required to complete a Discipline Choice form (available from the engineering secretary in MM213-B). Students rank their chosen discipline on the form which is forwarded to Dalhousie for Placeholder status (conditional acceptance to Dalhousie). No student has a guarantee of acceptance into their discipline of choice. Entry into specific disciplines is a matter of academic competition and evaluation is made purely on academic standing. A student who completes the 2-yr. Diploma with a G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher is assured a place in the Bachelors degree program. Some borderline students near 2.0 may not get into their first discipline choice, however, this is just the same for Dalhousie students as it is for students from any associated university.
Q. What are the minimum requirements to get into the Engineering Diploma program at Saint Mary's University?
A. A complete list of requirements is available from the Admissions Office or the current Academic Calendar (both available via Saint Mary's home page).
Q. How do I go about getting advanced credits from another institution?
A. Credit assessment is carried out after a student is registered in the Engineering program. An official transcript and course descriptions from previously attended educational institutions must be sent to the Registrar. Students transferring from other recognized universities or post-secondary institutions may be given advanced standing credit, if appropriate, in consultation with the Dept. Head. For further details see the Academic Calendar.
Q. Is it possible to obtain a Diploma of Engineering by attending only night courses? I have a full time job but would like to further my education.
A. Engineering courses are held during the day only. During summer (May-Aug) several courses may be held from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Q. What is the passing grade for the Diploma in Engineering?
