Chemistry - Requirements for Majors & Honours in Chemistry

Both our Majors and Honors programs are accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry. Total of 120 credit hours is required to graduate with a B.Sc. degree with Major or Honors in Chemistry. Currently, our Department offers mostly three-credit hours courses (3 credit hours per course per term); only CHEM 4498.0 and CHEM 5000.0 are six-credit hours courses.

Major in Chemistry - General requirements (42 - 54 credit hours in Chemistry)

  • 3 credit hours in English (ENGL 1205)
  • 3 credit hours in Humanities: Classics, English other than ENGL 1205, History, Philosophy, Religious Studies and Modern Languages (courses on literature and/or culture); students planning to apply to professional schools requiring 6 credit hours of writing component are advised to take ENGL 1205 and any course in English from among ENGL 2300 to ENGL 2393
  • 6 credit hours in Physics (PHYS 1210 and PHYS 1211; usually in 1st year )
  • 6 credit hours in Mathematics (MATH 1210 and MATH 1211; usually in 1st year )
  • 3 credit hours in Mathematics, Computer Science or Statistics above MATH 1210/1211
  • 3 credit hours in Chemistry at 1200 level (CHEM 1210)
  • 3 credit hours in Chemistry at 1000 level above CHEM 1210 (one of CHEM 1211 or 1212 or 1213)\ 24 credit hours in Chemistry at 2000 and 3000 level (CHEM 2312; CHEM 2313; CHEM 3322; CHEM 3324; CHEM 2332; CHEM 2333; CHEM 2344; CHEM 2345)
  • 3 credit hours - CHEM 3451 or CHEM 4452
  • 9 credit hours in Chemistry at 4000 level ( excluding CHEM 4498.0 )
  • Option - up to 12 additional credit hours in Chemistry; CHEM 4498.0 is recommended
  • 12 credit hours in Arts and/or Economics in addition to ENGL 1205 as above ( excluding: ECON 1205, ECON 1206, ECON 2207, all Psychology and Mathematics courses; including all Geography courses )
  • 24 credit hours in non-major Science ( excluding ASTR 1217, BIOL/ENVS 1203.0, CHEM 1220, 1221, and 2380, FRSC 2200, 2201, GEOL 1202 and 1203, MATH 1190, 1202, 1203 and 1207, and PSYC 1200 ) in addition to the Mathematics requirements as above ( excluding Geography, Engineering and Environmental Studies )
  • sufficient elective credit hours to complete required 120 credit hours

Other requirements

  • CQPA - minimum 1.70
  • No mark in Chemistry lower than C (2.0)

Honours in Chemistry - General requirements (60 - 72 credit hours in Chemistry)

  • 3 credit hours in English (ENGL 1205)
  • 3 credit hours in Humanities: Classics, English other than ENGL 1205, History, Philosophy, Religious Studies and Modern Languages (courses on literature and/or culture); students planning to apply to professional schools requiring 6 credit hours of writing component are advised to take ENGL 1205 and any course in English from among ENGL 2300 to ENGL 2393
  • 6 credit hours in Physics (PHYS 1210 and PHYS 1211; in 1st year )
  • 6 credit hours in Mathematics (MATH 1210 and MATH 1211; in 1st year )
  • 6 credit hours in Mathematics above 1000 level (MATH 2310 and MATH 2311; in 2nd year )

  • 3 credit hours - CHEM 3451 or CHEM 4452
  • 3 credit hours - CHEM 4412
  • 6 credit hours - CHEM 4498.0
  • 6 credit hours - CHEM 4500.0 (Research Thesis)
  • 3 credit hours - CHEM 4421 or CHEM 4422 or CHEM 3445

  • 3 credit hours - CHEM 3443 or CHEM 4444
  • 3 credit hours - in Chemistry at 4000 level
  • OPTION - up to 12 additional credit hours in Chemistry

Majors and Honors program requirements prior to September 2005

Total of 20 credits is required to graduate with a B.Sc. degree with Major or Honors in Chemistry. Currently, our Department offers mostly one-half credit courses; only CHE 498, and CHE 500, are full one-credit courses (listed here as CHE XYZ.0).


Major in Chemistry - General requirements

  • 7 - 9 credits in Chemistry
  • 1 credit in English [EGL 201 and EGL 205];
  • 1 credit in Physics [PHY 210 and PHY 211];
  • 1 credit in Mathematics [MAT 210 and MAT 211];
  • 1/2 credit in Mathematics [above MAT 210/211];
  • 1 credit in Chemistry at 200 level [CHE 210 and one of CHE 211 or 212 or 213];
  • 4 credits in Chemistry at 300 level [CHE 312; CHE 313; CHE 322; CHE 324; CHE 332; CHE 333; CHE 344; CHE 345];
  • 1/2 credit - CHE 451 or CHE 452
  • 1 and 1/2 credits in Chemistry at 400 level (excluding CHE 498.0);
  • OPTION - up to 2 additional credits in Chemistry;
  • 2 credits in Arts and/or Economics in addition to credit in English as above [excluding ECO 205; ECO 206, ECO 207];
  • 3 credits in Science [excluding AST 217, BIO 203.0, CHE 220, 221, and 380, GEO 202 and 203, MAT 190, 202, and 207, and PSY 200; in addition to the Mathematics requirements as above];

  • 10 - 12 credits in Chemistry

  • 1 credit in Mathematics [MAT 310 and MAT 311];
  • 1 credit in Chemistry at 200 level [[CHE 210 and one of CHE 211 or 212 or 213];
  • 4 credits in Chemistry at 300 level [CHE 312; CHE 313; CHE 322; CHE 324; CHE 332; CHE 333; CHE 344; CHE 345];
  • 1/2 credit - CHE 412;
  • 1/2 credit - CHE 451 or CHE 452
  • 1 credit - CHE 498.0;
  • 1 credit - CHE 500.0 (Research Thesis);
  • 1/2 credit - CHE 421 or CHE 422 or CHE 445;
  • 1/2 credit - CHE 432 or CHE 433;
  • 1/2 credit - CHE 443 or CHE 444;
