Welcome to the web pages of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR).
The FGSR was established by Saint Mary's University in the spring of 2001 in response to the desire to expand the graduate studies and research activities within the University (see SMU Academic Planning Framework Document). Although SMU has had graduate programs since the late-1950's amongst the Faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce, the FGSR now oversees the 18 Graduate Programs across the University in coordination with these Faculties. Our other mandate is to help facilitate and expand the research capacity of the University. A vibrant research environment is not only the hallmark of any great university, it also enlivens the University experience for all its members (undergraduates, graduate students, Faculty and staff), educates the leaders of tomorrow, serves the needs of society by the expansion of knowledge, and acts as an economic engine for the local, regional, and national community.
Within the FGSR Office, located on the second floor of the Atrium Building, are the Research Grants Officer, the Graduate Studies Officer, the Industry Liaison Officer, the Industry Liaison Coordinator, the Secretary to the Dean, and the Dean of the FGSR.

Students - Connect Canada Internship Program
Connect Canada is a federally-funded, national internship program that links Canadian companies with graduate students and post-doctoral fellows for research placements. Open to companies in any sector and students in any field, Connect Canada is a cost-effective way for companies to conduct R&D while providing students with an opportunity to enhance their graduate studies while gaining real-world experience. Canada interns will apply the latest in research methods and know-how to the most pressing industrial R&D issues.
Students - Dr. Andrew Taylor Northern Studies Award and Research Grant
This grant of $1000 is given in odd-numbered years to a student or scholar whose research project shows academic merit and which employs the Andrew Taylor collection for research purposes or to promote the collection; or who employs other materials relating to polar regions that are held at the University of Manitoba Archives and Special Collections.
Students - Hansard Society/University of Edinburgh Research Scholars Program.
The Hansard Society/ University of Edinburgh Research Scholars Programme is a challenging opportunity for graduates and professionals to pursue a specific area of political academic interest whilst participating in an internship placement within the world of British politics.
Students - South African National Parks Volunteer Programme. In partnership with the South African National Parks board, Global Vision International is offering one-year internship placements at parks throughout South Africa.
Faculty - Human Frontier Science Program. The HFSP supports international collaborations in basic research with emphasis placed on novel, innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to fundamental investigations in the life sciences. Applications are invited for grants to support projects on complex mechanisms of living organisms.
