Introductory Courses

(Revised May 2007. Students should refer to the current academic calendar.)

All students must begin their Sociology studies with SOCI 1210.1(.2)* followed by SOCI 1211.1(.2).** SOCI 1210.1(.2) is the prerequisite for SOCI 1211.1(.2). These classes may not be taken at the same time. Both of these courses may be used for the partial fulfillment of the Faculty of Arts Regulation 3(d) as described in the Academic Calendar. Since almost all 3000-level courses require both SOCI 1210.1(.2) and SOCI 1211.1(.2), non-majors interested in taking courses beyond the introductory level will have to complete both these courses.Students who have received credit for SOC 200.0 cannot receive additional credit(s) for any of these courses. SOC 200.0 also serves as a prerequisite to courses at the 3000-level and to the Sociology major.

*A half-year (.1 or .2) class is generally counted as 3 credit hours, a full year class, sometimes listed as .0 or as .1xx .2yy ( NOTE: students must register in both halves of the course) is 6 credit hours.

** A .1 refers to a class offered in September and ending in December. A .2 is a class offered in January, ending in the spring. If a class number ends in .XX there is a corresponding .YY. These are the two halves of a full year course and students must register for both halves.

Major Program

Students are expected to declare a major in Sociology during their first course, SOCI 1210.1(.2). If students complete that course with at least a minimum grade of C, they fulfill the prerequisite requirement to register in SOCI 1211.1(.2).The achievement of a minimum grade of C in this course allows students to apply for a major in Sociology. Transfer students seeking entry to this major must be assessed separately by the Department Chairperson or Department Student Advisor. Transfer students are those students who have completed the standard admission and registration procedures after having transferred from another post-secondary academic institution.

Major Requirements

To complete a major in Sociology, students must satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Both Introductory Sociology [1210.1(.2)] and Critical Issues in Social Analysis [1211.1(.2)] must be completed with a minimum grade of C.
  2. All other courses required for the Sociology major must be completed with a cumulative quality point average of at least C.
  3. While acceptance as a major in Sociology depends on the student’s final grade in SOCI 1211.1(.2), potential majors are expected to file a “Declaration of Major” form while enrolled in the course. Once final grades have been received and processed, the Department will notify students whether their request to major in Sociology has been accepted or rejected. Students who are accepted are responsible for seeking faculty advising.
  4. Normally in the second year of a four-year program, but certainly after the completion of SOCI 1210.1(.2) and 1211.1(.2) (which are prerequisites), students must complete Classical Sociological Theory [2362.1(.2)]; Contemporary Sociological Theory [2363.1(.2)]; Research Design [2364.1(.2)]; and Data Analysis [2365.1(.2)]. Students are advised to note that SOCI 2362.1(.2) and SOCI 2364.1(.2) are also prerequisites respectively for SOCI 2363.1(.2) and 2365.1(.2).
  5. Complete twelve (12) credit hours at the 3000 or 4000 level.
  6. Complete the equivalent of a six (6) credit hour seminar at the 4000 level. Students are advised to check carefully as to which courses do not fulfill this requirement. These are noted in the Academic Calendar.
  7. For students majoring in both Sociology and Criminology, only twelve (12) credit hours can be double counted for cross-listed courses.

Minor Program

The minor in Sociology requires twenty-four (24) credit hours in Sociology completed with a minimum quality point average of C. These courses are:

  1. Introductory Sociology [1210.1(.2)] and either Understanding Society [1212.1(.2)] or Critical Issues in Social Analysis [1211.1(.2)].
  2. The equivalent of eighteen (18) credit hours in Sociology at the 3000 or 4000 level.
  3. For students majoring in Sociology and Criminology, only twelve (12) credit hours can be double counted for cross-listed courses.

B.A. with a Concentration in Sociology

Students in a ninety (90) credit hour B.A. program with a concentration in Sociology are required to complete twenty-four (24) Sociology credit hours with a minimum quality point average of 2.00. Courses cross-listed with Criminology may not be double counted.

Notes & Disclaimers:

All courses are the equivalent of three hours a week each academic year - although specific course schedules are decided by the Department of Sociology and Criminology.
