Bachelor of Arts, Criminology, Honours Program:
Honours Program
(Revised May 2007. Students should refer to the current academic calendar.)
This is a selective program to which outstanding, undergraduate students may either apply or be invited to apply for admission. Successful completion assists students in applications to both graduate and professional schools.
While this academic program follows the general requirements of Saint Mary's University, as outlined in Sections 3, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 of the Faculty of Arts section of the Academic Calendar, there are also some regulations particular to the Department of Sociology and Criminology.
Honours Requirements
Students should obtain the detailed requirements from the Department of Sociology and Criminology, for the Honours program, before beginning the application process. Students are expected to submit their application between February 1st and May 1st of the year before they wish to begin the Honours program. This application must be accompanied by a faculty member's written agreement that they will serve as a Supervisor for the Honours Thesis, an integral part of the requirements of CRIM 4500.0. We encourage students to apply in February, rather than waiting until May, because it is easier to find a supervisor at that time.
The program for each Honours student is supervised by the Department of Sociology and Criminology and requires the completion of five (5.0) credits, including the following:
- Honours Seminar [CRIM 4500.0/SOCI 4530.0]
- Advanced Criminological Theory [CRIM 4501.1(.2)]
- Advanced Research Methodology in Criminology [CRIM 4502.1(.2)] or Advanced Research Methods [SOCI 4493.1(2)]
- Eighteen (18) additional credit hours from Group B electives. No more than six (6) of these credit hours may be Directed Reading courses.
To be admitted into the Honours program, students must have achieved a minimum quality point average of at least 3.30 in Sociology and Criminology courses. In order to continue and graduate from the Honours program, a student must achieve and maintain this minimum quality point average.
Notes & Disclaimers
All courses are the equivalent of three hours a week each academic year - although specific course schedules are decided by the Department of Sociology and Criminology.
