of Arts, Criminology Major Program

For admission to the program, students must have completed SOCI 1210.1(.2)** and SOCI 1211.1(.2) with a minimum grade of C in each course as well as six (6.0) additional credit hours* with a minimum grade of C in each course from the following courses: ANTH 1200.0, ANTH 1202.1(.2), ANTH 1280.1(.2), ECON 1201.1(.2), ECON 1202.1(.2), HIST 1240.0; POLI 1200.0, POLI 1230.1(.2), PSYC 1200.1(.2), PSYC 1250.1(.2), or PSYC 1260.1(.2)
*A half-year (.1 or .2) class is generally counted as 3 credit hours, a full year class, sometimes listed as .0 or as .1xx .2yy ( NOTE: students must register in both halves of the course) is 6 credit hours.
** A .1 refers to a class offered in September and ending in December. A .2 is a class offered in January, ending in the spring. If a class number ends in .XX there is a corresponding .YY which must also be registered for, these are the two halves of a full year course.
Transfer students seeking entry to this major must be assessed separately by the Sociology and Criminology Student Advisor. Transfer students are those students who have completed the standard admission and registration procedures after having transferred from another post-secondary academic institution.
Major Requirements
To major in Criminology, students must complete forty-two (42) credit hours including:
- Core Program Courses [eighteen (18) credit hours)] Note: To register for each of these core courses, students must already be a declared major in Criminology.
- CRIM 2300.1(.2) Classical Criminological Theory
- CRIM 2301.1(.2) Contemporary Criminological Theory
- CRIM 2302.1(.2) Criminal Statistics
- CRIM 2303.1(.2) Crime and Society
- CRIM 2304.1(.2) Canadian Criminal Justice System
- CRIM 2364.1(.2)/SOCI 2364.1(.2) Research Methods
- Group A - Elective Courses [twelve (12) credit hours)] - Complete twelve (12) credit hours chosen from available course offerings in CRIM at the 3000 level.
- Group B - Elective Courses [six (6) credit hours] - Complete six (6) credit hours chosen from available course offerings in CRIM at the 4000 level or PSYC 3320.1(.2); PSYC 3335.1(.2); PHIL 3332.1(.2) and PHIL 3333.1(.2).
- Group C - Cognate Courses [six (6) credit hours] - The equivalent of six (6) credit hours at the 3000 or 4000 level not listed as part of the Criminology major (i.e. core courses, Group A or Group B) in one of the following social sciences: anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology and sociology.
- Because of the significant interest in Criminology, the number of qualified students permitted to declare Criminology as their major may have to be limited.
- For students majoring in both Sociology and Criminology, only twelve (12) credit hours can be double counted for cross-listed courses.
Minor in Criminology
There is no minor offered in Criminology.
