History involves the mastery of complex bodies of knowledge and the questioning of widely held assumptions. In an electronic age, the ability to carry out research, to evaluate evidence, to think creatively and to argue effectively is more essential than ever. Graduates from the Saint Mary’s History Department have moved on to successful careers as journalists, teachers, archivists, museum administrators, public servants, web designers, business leaders and university professors.

The Department has expertise in American, Asian, Canadian, European, and Latin American History, the quality of which has been recognized through an array of fellowships and grants  Nine of our department's current complement of twelve have received funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), some on several occasions.  Click on the Faculty link to the left to learn more.

Many of our students who have chosen to remain in academia have won prizes, fellowships, and research grants of their own.  To contact our Graduate Programme Coordinator, send an e-mail to HistoryMA@smu.ca.
