Basic Arts Requirements

In your first-year, we recommend using the Basic Arts Requirements as a guide for choosing courses.

The Basic Arts Requirements:

  • Allow you to explore subjects from Arts, Science and Commerce.
  • Help you develop important intellectual and academic skills that you will use throughout your program.
  • Provide you with courses you can use if you decide to switch faculties.
Basic Arts # Credit Hours Basic Arts Requirements
3(a)
3 hrs
LITERATURE
All students must take ENGL 1205.1(2) Introduction to Literature.
3(b) 6 hrs LANGUAGE, MATH, NATURAL SCIENCE , CRITICAL THINKING
Students must have the equivalent of 6 credit hours from the following:

PHIL 1200 Critical Thinking;
Mathematics
Language courses – ARBC, CHNS, FREN, GRMN, IRST, JPNS, LATN, SPAN
Management Science courses – MGSC 1205, 1206, 2207 & CISY 1225
Natural Science courses – ASTR, BIOL, CHEM, GEOL, MATH, PHYS.

Students who have not completed a grade 12 science may select from: ASTR 1215, 1216, 1217, BIOL 1203, 2303, CHEM 1220, 1221, GEOL 1202,1203, 1208

3(c) 9 hrs HUMANITIES
Students must have the equivalent of 9 credit hours from two different subjects in the Humanities. A maximum of 6 credit hours can be counted from any one area.

Classics(CLAS)
History(HIST)
Religious Studies(RELS)
Philosophy other than PHIL 1200.0
English(ENGL) at 2000 or higher
Language courses in literature and culture taught in English (Asian Studies (ASNT 1105 1106, 2303, 2305, 2311) German (GRMN 3306, 3307, SPAN 3304), or Atlantic Canada Studies (ACST 1000, 2311), or Irish Studies (IRST 2350).

3(d) 12 hrs SOCIAL SCIENCES
Students must have the equivalent of 12 credit hours from the Social Sciences. A maximum of 6 credit hours can be counted from any one area.
