First Year (0-30hrs)

Your job this year is to EXPLORE !  Choose courses you find interesting and discover new subjects.

With so much choice, first-year course selection can be a little overwhelming.  Use the Basic Arts Requirements as your guide in choosing courses.

The Basic Arts Requriements are designed to introduce you to cultural analysis, abstract reasoning, and scholarly inquiry in the Humanities and Social Sciences.  They are also part of your degree requriements, so you should try to fulfill as many as possible in your first year.

Select your first-year courses based on themes!

We have identified groups of first-year courses that will help you meet the Basic Arts Requriements as well as provide you with a theme for your first year of study!  Feel free to choose courses from those listed below or opt for different courses.

Second Year (33-60hrs)

Your second year is still about exploration, only now it will be with a view to determining what your major(s) will be so that by the end of 2nd year you'll be able to formally declare your program.  Although there are no specific requirements for course selection in your second year, a good strategy would include the following:

  • courses that will satisfy any outstanding Basic Arts Requirements

  • courses at the 2000 or 3000 level in subjects of particular interest to you – subjects you may want to major in!

  • include 1000 level courses in subjects of interest that you haven't yet had a change to explore.

It is important that you collect as much information as possible about you, the kind of careers you want to be prepared for, and your program options.  Here are some links to resources on our website to help you get started gathering this information:

What can I do with a BA in ______?

What are my particular aptitudes and interests?

What are my program options?

Access resources on campus including Career Services, your professors, and your academic advisors to find out as much as you can so you can make informed decisions about your degree.
