Six distinguished leaders to be honoured at Convocation

Philanthropist Kim Phuc Phan Thi, the subject of a Pulitzer Prize-winning photo taken in the aftermath of a napalm attack in Vietnam, is one of six distinguished leaders to be awarded honorary degrees during Saint Mary's University’s Spring Convocation. The University will also recognize the achievements of banking leader, A. Douglas McGregor; entrepreneur, Bassam Nahas; strategist, Maureen Reid; educator and administrator, Pauline Scott; and retail visionary, Annette Verschuren O.C.

“Saint Mary’s University has a proud tradition of conferring honorary degrees upon individuals whose accomplishments are consistent with our scholarly mission,” said Saint Mary's President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert Summerby-Murray when releasing the names.  “We are very pleased to recognize Douglas McGregor, Bassam Nahas, Kim Phuc Phan Thi, Maureen Reid, Pauline Scott, and Annette Verschuren with the University’s highest honour and look forward to welcoming them to the Santamarian family.”

Douglas McGregor will receive a Doctor of Commerce, Honoris Causa on Wednesday, May 18th at 10 a.m. during a Convocation ceremony for undergraduate programs in the Sobey School of Business.  Later that day, Bassam Nahas will receive a Doctor of Commerce, Honoris Causa during a 2:00 pm Convocation ceremony for undergraduate programs in the Sobey School of Business, and Diplomas and Certificates in Commerce.

At 10:00am on Thursday, May 19th, during a morning ceremony for undergraduate programs in the Faculty of Science, Saint Mary’s will confer a Doctor of Civil Law, Honoris Causa upon Annette Verschuren. That afternoon at 2:00 pm, Kim Phuc Phan Thi will receive a Doctor of Civil Law, Honoris Causa in a Convocation ceremony for degrees in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.

Maureen Reid and Pauline Scott will each receive the degree Doctor of Civil Law, Honoris Causa on Friday, May 20th. Ms. Reid will be honoured during a 10:00am ceremony for undergraduate programs in the Faculty of Arts. Ms. Scott will be recognized at 2:00pm during a ceremony for students receiving Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Environmental Studies degrees and diplomas and certificates in the Faculty of Arts.
