Saint Mary’s introducing Syrian newcomers to Atlantic University Sport football
14 October, 2016
When Saint Mary’s plays their highly-anticipated homecoming football game against St. Francis Xavier University on Saturday at 2 pm, there will be some special guests in the crowd. Saint Mary’s University Athletics & Recreation in partnership with SMUSA, and the Enactus 360 project has invited over 50 Syrian newcomers to Huskies Stadium to attend their first Atlantic University Sport football game.
“Building on last year’s exciting introduction to Canadian hockey with a visit to watch our Huskies hockey team at the University Cup, we are thrilled to host our friends at this Saturday’s homecoming football game against StFX,” says Kevin Downie, Saint Mary’s University Athletic Director. “We expect Saturday afternoon to be a fun time for all and a further opportunity for the Syrian newcomers to experience the highly competitive and entertaining varsity sport scene here in Halifax.”
To celebrate homecoming, along with this special occasion, Saint Mary’s University Alumni has organized a pre-game fun zone and barbeque for the attendees to enjoy. The barbeque will also be providing Halal Food options.
Attendees will also be presented with Huskies cheer gear to give them an authentic Saint Mary’s football experience.
Ossama Nasrallah is Vice President of Student Affairs with SMUSA, which is sponsoring the event. He is also part of the Enactus 360 Project that has been providing assistance to Syrian newcomers since they started arriving in Nova Scotia. Nasrallah says the welcome reception of last year’s hockey game was the motivation he needed to organize the homecoming football game experience.
“Remembering the smiles on their faces at last year’s hockey game motivated us to come up with the idea of showing them their first football game,” says Nasrallah. “We want to make this game a new experience for our friends at the Huskies Stadium. A huge thank you to the Alumni and Athletics departments for providing the pre-game experience and creating a welcoming atmosphere.”
The Saint Mary’s Huskies football team takes to the field at Huskies Stadium on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm, with the pre-game fun zone and barbeque starting at 12:30 pm in the Arena Parking Lot.
